Barges aren’t just slow-moving vessels on sleepy rivers; they move the bulk of America’s heaviest freight.

In fact, 70% of the nation’s grain and 40% of Nashville’s gasoline are shipped by barge, according to Jason Aristides, CEO of OpenTug. And when a load is too heavy for the highway, barges become the no-permit-needed workaround that keeps oversized equipment, military gear, and industrial cargo flowing.
