The truckload market looks fragmented, but most of the capacity sits with just a few players.

Chris Caplice of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and DAT Freight & Analytics explains that while 96 percent of carriers run fewer than 20 trucks, a small 4 percent controls two-thirds of all capacity. Because it’s so easy to enter and exit the market, truckload cycles swing hard and fast, especially during events like the pandemic.
