Agave isn’t just the plant tequila comes from. It’s been woven into Mexican life for over 10,000 years, and spending time in Mexico made that very clear.

During our visit, our tour guide walked us through everything agave has been used for across centuries: textiles made from its fibers, traditional medicines derived from its sap, and of course, the distillation process that gives us mezcal and tequila. Hearing it explained on-site, surrounded by the actual plants, hits differently than reading about it in a book.

This video covers the full picture: the deep cultural and ritual history of agave in indigenous Mexican communities, how it became a cornerstone of the country’s identity, and how that ancient relationship with the plant eventually became a global industry.

If you’ve ever sipped mezcal, worn something made from agave fiber, or just been curious about what this spiky desert plant actually is, this one’s for you.
